Hungarian performance artist and director Tibor Varszegi will bring his one-man play to Virginia Tech on Monday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building's black box theatre (Room 204). The performance is free and open to the public.

The play, which is written by its performer, is entitled “The Age of The Calling to Account I. The Crook” and features but a few spoken lines, three props, and plenty of movement. It also comes with a hint as to its content.

“On the field, if you lean on top of the crook with both of your hands, you can become with the field. By means of the crook, your arms touch the earth; your spirit and soul can meet the earth’s. It helps you remember your ancestors and descendants – the past and the future,” said Várszegi.

Várszegi, who is fluent in both Russian and English, is associate professor in the Linguistics-Literature Department of Jászberény Teacher’s Training College. Várszegi has participated in various theatre performances since 1988, and with his own troupe since 1992 where he is not only an actor but also a director.

Besides the Hungarian theatres, he and his troupe have had performed in the Cologne university theatre, in the town theatre in Erfurt, in the choreography centre in Arnhem, in the opera in Leipzig, in the Bojan Stupica Theater in Belgrade, in the youth theatre in Ljubljana, in the Serbian National Theater in Újvidék, in the House of Arts in Kanizsa, and at Toledo University and the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a member of the Board of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Hungarian Philosophic Association.
