On May 16, 2006, University Unions & Student Activities (UUSA), a unit within the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, announced the recipients of the University Unions & Student Activities Core Values and Mission Possible Awards at the Student Programs Appreciation Breakfast held in Shultz Dining Hall.

The Core Value Awards are given annually to those employees in University Unions & Student Activities who exemplify the four values that guide the unit. These values include student learning, community, service, and the commitment to excellence.

The Student Learning Award was presented to Tim Filbert, of Radford, Va., the assistant director of leadership development. He has expanded educational opportunities for the entire student body and has strived to constantly improve as a professional and educator. A nominator said of Filbert, “The students at Virginia Tech are lucky to have him on campus.” Tim Filbert has been with University Unions & Student Activities for two years.

The Community Award was given to Janis Wilfore, of Blacksburg, Va., the event planning office manager. Wilfore is characterized by her “buoyant personality” and genuine concern for fellow employees. She is an active staff member and participates as much as possible in training and social activities in University Unions & Student Activities. Wilfore has been with University Unions & Student Activities over five years.

The Service Award was presented to Kevin Ayoub, of Blacksburg, Va., the Squires building manager. Ayoub is consistently concerned with improving Squires Student Center and keeping the facility a safe and welcoming place to be. He trains student personnel to ensure ownership and dedication to their positions. Ayoub has been with University Unions & Student Activities for four years.

The Commitment to Excellence award was given to Brian James, of Christiansburg, Va., the technical services director. James is dedicated to perfecting University Unions & Student Activities by consistently proposing improvements to services and programs. He can be relied upon to give composed guidance during emergency situations. James has been with University Unions & Student Activities for ten years.

Scott Reed, of Salem, Va., the associate director of University Unions & Student Activities, was named the recipient of the 2006 Mission Possible Award. This award is given annually to an employee that exemplifies the characteristics set in the University Unions & Student Activities Mission Statement. Reed has worked countless hours to make it possible for students to have opportunities, access to programs and services to meet their needs and to believe that Virginia Tech is a university that supports them. Reed has been with University Unions & Student Activities for ten years.
