Weeklong arts celebration - Arts Fusion 2006 - to be held April 19 - 25
Arts Fusion 2006, the third annual week-long celebration of the arts on campus and in the local community, will be held April 19 – 25. Arts Fusion 2006 includes over 75 events in music, art, theatre, dance, film and writing.
The overarching goal for Arts Fusion is to provide an opportunity for the campus and community to come together through a celebration of the arts. Arts Fusion strives to include events that appeal to a wide range of audiences, from chamber music to jazz, street theatre to fully-staged performances, children’s art workshops to gallery exhibitions, student film festivals to popular movies, and tap performances to DJ dance nights.
Featured events for Arts Fusion 2006 will include an evening celebrating poetry in a salute to the future with the presentation of the Steger Award, a Saturday evening arts celebration and concert on Henderson Lawn, the Department of Theatre Arts’ production of Romeo & Juliet, art lectures and exhibits sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History and performances by the Department of Music’s jazz and wind ensembles. Arts Fusion 2006 will close with a performance by the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra of Lincoln Center, sponsored by Virginia Tech Union Lively Arts and the Virginia Tech Department of Music.
Arts Fusion is again partnering with Art Pannonia, XYZ Student Art Association, the Progeny Film Festival, and the Virginia Tech Union. The Progeny Film Festival, an annual student film festival sponsored by the Department of Communication, celebrates its fourth year in conjunction with the Department of Communication’s 25th Anniversary. Other events include an A Cappella Night featuring Mixed Emotions, Juxtaposition, Soulstice, Sensations and Naturally Sharp, a dance showcase featuring student and local dance groups, and lunchtime events in music, dance and film.
Sponsored by the Virginia Tech School of the Arts, the departments of Music, Theatre Arts, Art and Art History, and English, as well as the Graduate Arts Council, the purpose of Arts Fusion is two-fold:
• To celebrate the vibrant artistic scene that currently exists in the community
• To offer an artistic experience that would otherwise be unavailable.
Arts Fusion was founded during the spring of 2004 by the School of the Arts, included over 30 events in theatre, art, music and dance, and reached an audience of thousands. During the spring of 2005, Arts Fusion expanded to include events in film and creative writing. This year, expansions are limited to the addition of events within genres with the hope of reaching a wider audience, including student art and photography exhibits, outdoor events and concerts, and the Afro-Latin Jazz concert.
“By continuing our relationships with undergraduates at Virginia Tech and reaching out more to the Blacksburg community and graduate students, we’re hoping to increase the impact of Arts Fusion even further and have it become an integral part of the local community,” said Elyse Gonyo, producer of Arts Fusion 2006.
