John E. Dooley of Blacksburg, Va., vice provost for outreach and international affairs for Virginia Tech, has been appointed commissioner of the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission.

“We are honored that John accepted this appointment to the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission,” said Roanoke mayor C. Nelson Harris. “Virginia Tech is an integral part of the southwest Virginia economy and community. With Dr. Dooley’s leadership experience and his ties to the local community, we are confident that he will be a great asset to the airport commission.”

As vice provost for outreach and international affairs, Dooley provides management, leadership, and vision to the comprehensive range of programs related to the university’s outreach and international missions, including oversight of the Office of Economic Development; the Commonwealth Campus Centers; Continuing and Professional Education; the Office of International Research, Education, and Development; Outreach Program Services; the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center; the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center; Service Learning Center; the Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement; and the Center for European Studies and Architecture. Dooley has been active in the community developing initiatives that help individuals, families, and businesses.

Dooley holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia and a master’s and doctorate in higher education administration from Virginia Tech.

The Roanoke Regional Airport is the primary air carrier airport for southwest Virginia. The airport moves over 700,000 passengers per year via four airlines with nonstop service to eight hub cities.
