Parents’ Day 2005 at Virginia Tech Saturday, Oct. 15 offers parents and their students an opportunity to get to know the university from many aspects—the educational and recreational, the fun times and the study times, the military precision and the history of the campus.

Administrators and faculty will be on hand to meet and greet parents during the President’s Brunch from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Squires Student Center. After that, the schedule presents opportunities to take in a session for younger brothers and sisters, talk about the campus climate, learn about various subjects of study and research, and tour such places as the Geoscience Museum, historic Smithfield Plantation, the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, and the trees and plants around campus.

Visiting parents and their children also will see a parade of the Cadet Regiment and ROTC presentations by the Air Force and Navy. They will learn how a Global Positioning System works, find out how the Alumni Association and Hokie Parents Fund can help the family, attend a session on education abroad, and tour the new Career Services building.

Fun things are also happening that day. Parents can listen to Appalachian storytellers, with a $10 cost to benefit community-service projects, attend the Jazzburg festival in downtown Blacksburg,, participate in a casino night of card games, roulette, or craps, with proceeds going to charity, or drive up to Mountain Lake to take in part of the Oktoberfest 2005 with its toasting, feasting, and music.
